About
Us
After
beginning as a “one book company,” Devereux Books celebrated
its 10th anniversary in 2004. Today, as ever, we remain dedicated
to publishing well-researched and finely written books that are
unique in concept. That means many of our titles are publishing
“firsts” and we appreciate comments from readers who
say that a particular book was “long overdue.”
About
Our Name
| People
sometimes ask us about the company's name. We are located
in the old, coastal New England town of Marblehead, Massachusetts,
which dates to 1629 and is well known as a boating center
and as the birthplace of John Glover. It was Glover who
led the contingent of Marblehead fishermen that rowed Washington's
army across the Delaware for the famous Revolutionary War
attack on Trenton. In the 1870s, Marblehead began to attract
summer visitors for sailing and "bathing." The
most popular place for the latter activity was named for
the family that had long owned property in the area. It
was known then, as now, as Devereux Beach. Our publishing
business is located a stone's throw away. |
